Pre-K Program (4 year olds)
Pre-Kindergarten Application 2011-2012
Holy Spirit Pre-Kindergarten Program
Welcome to Holy Spirit Pre-Kindergarten. We are very excited to begin a new year full of learning, fun and adventure. We are jotting down a few of the important daily things we do in case you have any questions about the program.
MORNING ARRIVAL The doors on the SOUTH side of the annex will open at 7:50am. As the children enter, they will put their items on their assigned hook and proceed into the classroom and to their seats to put their attendance bear on the ATTENDANCE BOARD. After hanging up their bears, the children will be seated at their tables to draw a journal picture. CHILDREN ARRIVING AFTER 8:15AM WILL BE MARKED TARDY.
PRAYERS At 8:15am we will gather and pray the “Hail Mary”. The other prayers said during the day will be a snack prayer, “The Lord’s Blessing” at lunch, and before we leave for home beginning in January, the children say “The Angel of God” prayer.
RELIGION Our religion program this year is from the series “Stories of God’s ” for 4year olds. It is an introduction to who we are as children of God and our responsibilities as God’s children. There are Bible Stories relating to each lesson. We will attend the all school Masses once a month at 8:00am with our 7th grade buddies. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHILDREN WILL BE DROPPED OFF AT THE “BIG SCHOOL” AT 7:30am. ON THESE DAYS TO MEET WITH OUR BUDDIES IN THEIR CLASSROOM.
MATH MEETING Here we learn many wonderful things such as calendar, birthday dates, colors, shapes, directions, sorting, patterns, weather, counting and much more.
READING Our reading series is from Houghton Mifflin Pre-K. It is a monthly theme based program. The program covers the alphabet letters, writing, letter sounds, letter blending, story time and comprehension skills.
LIBRARY, AND ART/MUSIC These are our specials classes offered to us by the “Big School”. On Wednesday the children will travel to the “Big School” to visit with Mrs. Vorwerk for storytime. Mrs. Laurie Meyers, is our art/music teacher and will be teaching the children songs and doing art projects with them. There will be a Christmas Program that the children will perform in December.
SHOW ‘N TELL Each Wednesday we will have our show ‘n tell time before lunch at 11:30am. This special time, will be presented by each child on his/her assigned week. They can bring their favorite toy or item to share with the class. A special bag will be sent home to bring their things in on that day. PLEASE NOTE!!!!!.NO TOYS ARE TO BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL EXCEPT FOR SPECIAL ACTIVITIES LIKE SHOW ‘N TELL. THIS ELIMINATES BREAKAGE AND FIGHTING OVER CERTAIN THINGS BETWEEN THE CHILDREN.
NAPTIME/REST TIME Each day at 1:45pm. The children will be lying down for a nap or rest time. This is a required quiet time for 45mins. If the children sleep that is fine, if they choose not too sleep this is fine too, but they will be required to lie quietly as not to disturb the sleepers. A special stuffed animal or doll can be brought for nap/rest time only and the children have to leave this special toy in their cubby until this time. Due to the activities at the “Big School” (i.e., assemblies, buddy time, and art and library) sometimes nap/rest may not be given.
SNACK AND RECESS All snacks will be provided by school. If your child has any kind of food allergy, she should bring her snack from home as a safety measure. Snack is usually at 10:00am followed by a 30-min. recess.
LUNCH AND RECESS Lunch time will be held in our classroom at 11:45am. The children need to bring their lunch with a drink box each day. Please pack a lunch that doesn’t need refrigeration because we have limited space. We also ask that you pack a cold-type lunch that doesn’t need to be heated. It is sometimes very challenging to attend to so many children and their needs at this particular time.
BIRTHDAY TREATS On your child’s birthday, a treat can be brought to help us celebrate. Because of the health regulation all food brought from home must be prepackaged from a grocery store or bakery. Summer birthdays will be celebrated as ½ birthdays. We will send home a reminder of the best day to celebrate. This is also a dress out day for the birthday person.
FIELD TRIPS Throughout the year, we will try to take the children on several special field trips. Parents will be able to drive on two of the field trips because they are close to school, but will also be asking to help chaperone the children on these trips. All other trips will be taken on a bus. A permission slip will be sent home for your child to attend. This form must be signed and returned in order for your child to leave the school property with us. One or two trips a year will be taken with other grade levels. The children are required to wear their school uniforms to represent Holy Spirit School. All parents that go on our field trips MUST have the GOD’S PROTECTING CHILDREN CERTIFICATE. There are many classes scheduled to receive this certification. If you have not already taken this class, please notify the rectory at 739-0230.
DISMISSAL Our dismissal is a 11:50am for the children who will be leaving to go home for our ½ day program. Our full time students will be going home at 2:50pm. On scheduled ½ days due to faculty meetings etc. all children will be dismissed at 11:50am. ECP begins right after dismissal for those children requiring this care. All children will be leaving the building from the SOUTH door. The parents are asked to wait for their children outside. The teachers will get the children ready for dismissal.
FOR ALL DISMISSALS THE PARENTS ARE ASKED TO LEAVE THEIR CARS AND COME TO THE SOUTH DOOR TO WALK THEIR CHILD(REN)TO THEIR CARS. THIS IS A SAFETY PROCEDURE FOR THE CHILDREN.

Red folders will be sent home everyday to assure that all notes and papers are received and all notes, money or any correspondence from home is received. It is easier to grab a folder out of the backpacks then to search each bag each day.

KEYS—We have a program in which we teach the children in the areas of ATTITUDE, LOVE, PREPARATION, COOPERATION, DISCIPLINE, MOTIVATION, PERFORMANCE, and EFFORT. When the children give examples of these characteristics they receive a key. Twice a month the children get to take their keys to the Key Store to buy items with the number of keys they have earned.

CONFERENCES WITH THE TEACHER ARE IMPORTANT. But it is very important that we have the appropriate time and place to talk. In the classroom while dropping your child off in the morning or at dismissal time is not appropriate because of all the distractions and the confusion that is happening at that moment. Please talk to the teacher about setting up a time to meet and discuss what concerns you may have. There will be a parent/teacher conference in November and we encourageeveryone to sign up. A call from the teacher will usually occur if there is a concern about your child’s academics or behavior is in need of a conference.

REWARDS!!! We are sticker happy in Pre-K. We are always praising good choices and good behavior. Everyday the children receive special sticker rewards plus a small piece of candy from the candy jar for keeping their (smiley face)
Sometimes children forget and need reminders so they might receive a (sad face). But this is just because we know they can do better. Bu if they recieve a (sad face), no reward is given out that day. We remind the children always of the choices they need tomake and the ones they need to avoid. Please let us know of any allergies your child might have because of this special treat.
